Who We Are
Established in 2005, LED Community Leisure Ltd is a co-operative community benefit society (often referred to as a Leisure Trust) delivering leisure, health and community services.
Commonly known as LED, we operate 13 public Sports and Leisure facilities, a theatre and a family entertainment centre in partnership with local councils, school academies and other sporting organisations.
LED facilities enjoy over one million visitors a year and have around 10,000 members…
What We Do
LED exists to make provide community facilities and services for everyone. In practice, that means investing all surpluses back into providing quality leisure, health, entertainment, and hospitality facilities for the good of our communities.
Alongside our core leisure facilities, LED runs Ocean, a large family entertainment centre on Exmouth seafront, the nearby Exmouth Pavilion, and the catering outlets at Exeter Airport.
We also organise and run a wide range of community-based activities in schools and in or on our lovely East Devon countryside and beaches, many staffed by volunteers – we have over 50 assisting our Walking for Health programme, for example.
LED is always looking at ways in which to improve the services and facilities we offer and ways in which we can contribute positively to the local community. A report from 4 Global & Data Hub commissioned to understand the Social Value of the organisation in East Devon found that the Social Value generated across 7 sites run by LED was approximately £8.9million for 2019, as this was the last full year of activity before the COVID-19 pandemic. We have now returned to these levels.
Our History
LED was initially set up to run East Devon District Council’s leisure facilities from 2006, and due to our charitable status and from operating in a more commercial manner, had saved the Council and ratepayers over £5million to December 2019.
The Council provided additional financial support during the COVID-19 Pandemic, and we are now operating at pre-pandemic levels again, albeit facing the same increases in utility and staffing costs as the rest of the leisure industry.
The growth journey has allowed us to become one of the most diverse, inclusive and accessible leisure providers and to take on additional commercial activities, such as Ocean, fitness gyms in Seaton and Axminster, and the catering contract at Exeter Airport, which help make the Trust sustainable.
